Considered one of the most romantic stories in the history of mathematics, Srinivasa Ramanujan, a college dropout from a poor family in South India, made extraordinary mathematical discoveries in isolation and went on to be elected a Fellow of the prestigious Royal Society, London. Set in the early 20th century, “Ramanujan” is a gripping, emotional drama that chronicles his journey from British India to England in search of his destiny.
Every frame in “Ramanujan” was shot at the historical location to bring authenticity to the film. From Kumbakonam, a small temple town in South India where Ramanujan was raised, to Cambridge University, where Ramanujan conducted research during the World War are all recorded. We spent several months of intense research to visually recreate the early 1900’s on two continents.
Directed by the award-winning filmmaker Gnana Rajasekaran, cinematographed by veteran DOP Sunny Joseph, and with an Indo-British cast and crew, “Ramanujan” bagged several international awards. It also became known for its realistic depiction of the mathematician's struggles and accomplishments, and was lauded as a social impact film that inspired Indian youth.
